Charlie's Sister (Candace Kelmeckis) is a character in Perks Of Being Wallflower. She is Charlie's older sister, and is the middle child in the family. In the film, she is portrayed by Nina Dobrev.

She is passionate about women's rights, particularly after she is banned by her parents from seeing Derek. She graduates high school second in her year and goes on to study at a college called Sarah Lawrence.

Personality

Candace is characterized by her brother Charlie as mean and he doesn't understand how so many boys would like her since she was so mean to them. Even though she is mean to Charlie, and sometimes their older brother, she actually is quite loving and understanding when she wants to be. She cares deeply for him. She is smart and caring.

History

When Charlie witnessed Candace's boyfriend hitting her, she told Charlie to go upstairs. Candace was in love with this boy more than ever. Charlie told his English teacher which then he told his parents of what had happened and they forbid Candace from seeing this boy but she continued seeing him in secret. Eventually, he impregnated her and they broke up, later she lied to him that it was a false alarm and then got an abortion.

Candace seemed to have lots of fights with her older brother. When he came home from college they are seen fighting and Candace insults his new girlfriend. He, in turn, says that his girlfriend would never let a guy hit her and then continue dating him, which causes Candace to start crying in the car. Then he apologizes and says that he didn't mean what he said.

Relationships

Family

Charlie and Candace are very close, though they often fight. When Candace gets pregnant, Charlie drives her to Planned Parenthood to get an abortion. Charlie keeps the pregnancy a secret for her. In the film, Candace's pregnancy and abortion was not included and was cut from the final film.

Derek

Candace is already dating Derek when the book and movie begin. He gives her mixtapes with handcoloured covers and had a ponytail. Candace seems a little unappreciative of Derek, as she gives her mixtapes to Charlie (allowing him to discover the song Asleep). Candace and Derek argue (in the book, Charlie is in the room, in the film, Charlie watches through a crack in the door) and Derek slaps Candace. From then on, she shows a little more respect for him. When her parents find out that Derek slapped her, she is banned from seeing him.
